Leo frantically ran to them and scooped up Dante. A disturbingly heavy weight yanked at Dante’s chest. Leo followed the cables to the floor and saw Dante was attached to the Star Disc. He frantically disconnected the jumper cables.

“Gemini, what happened?” The big cat sheepishly looked at the floor. He circled around Leo three times then pressed his head into a corner, refusing to look at Leo.

Beatrice picked up the disc, carefully turning it over in her hands. A soft orange light emanated from a small notch on one side of the device.

Leo held up Dante. “His batteries are old. He needs to give himself a jump every other day.”

Leo gave Gemini a guilty look. “Usually somebody is nice enough to let Dante connect to his biodiesel engine for a jump start. But I guess somebody decided to let Dante connect to the Star Disc instead.”

Gemini scratched his paws into the wall and gave an apologetic whine. Beatrice opened up Dante’s chest compartment. She put her hand on his battery and held it there for a second.

“His batteries are hot, but they haven’t melted,” she reassured Leo.

“Gemini, come here, please.” Gemini trotted over to Leo with his tail between his legs. “I’m sorry, but you have to be delicate with Dante—he’s not as sturdy as you are.”

Gemini nuzzled into Leo’s neck.

Rocky leaned in and mumbled quietly to Beatrice, “He apologizes to these things like they have feelings?”

She ignored Rocky and watched Leo work. He tugged Gemini toward a power outlet. Then he connected the blue jumper cable to one of Gemini’s upper fangs and the red cable to a lower fang. “Now he needs a system reboot.”

He gently connected the jumper cables to Dante’s chest, then plugged Gemini’s tail into the outlet.

The little monkey zapped to life. He bounced up, performed a back handspring, and walked on his hands. “Yes, yes. We’re all impressed.”

Beatrice leaned in and whispered to Rocky, “So the robot monkey is fine, but a second on the Star Disc was too much? How? It doesn’t even seem to be on.”

Rocky nodded. “We’ve got to find out what’s in that disc.”
